Violent riots are currently taking place in Durban and Richards Bay in South Africa
and the surrounding areas of KwaZulu-Natal to protest the imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma for contempt of the Constitutional Court.
Durban port operators TNPA (Transnet National Port Authority) and TPT (Transnet Port Terminal) and various private terminals have declared force majeure in Durban Port.
If people and goods are not trucked into the port, the terminal will not be able to operate.
Richards Bay Maritime Services-pilots, tugs, berthing personnel-resumed operations yesterday (July 14), but capacity has declined.
Loading operations at various TPT facilities are proceeding according to the availability of staff and labor, although the situation appears to be improving.
But KwaZulu-Natal is still a very turbulent province.
"We are not sure what will happen in the next few days, and whether the police and army can restore order and control key points."
The situation is unstable and other ports may also be affected.
Members and customers should seek updates from local agents when planning voyages.
The movement ashore during the operation should be minimized,
and special attention should be paid to any planned crew replacement arrangements through South Africa at this time.
